Vlisco has been designing and manufacturing distinctive fabrics loved by African women since 1846. The specially crafted fabrics – Wax Hollandais, Super-Wax and Java – continue to be made with time-honoured methods and materials in Helmond, the Netherlands.
Vlisco first launched the Vlisco&Co initiative in Accra and Lagos, and on Saturday 13th October, Vlisco&Co Côte d’Ivoire was launched at Galerie Cécile Fakhoury in Abidjan. Vlisco&Co is a cultural evening that brings together young African creative talents who interpret their own vision of Vlisco designs. The theme for the Ivorian edition was to highlight the golden age of Côte d’Ivoire, between the 1960s-80s, which was a time when the country was well known for its architecture, elegant fashion, exciting lifestyle and scene. My illustrations, which were exhibited on the night of the launch, were inspired by the Ivorian fashion magazines and the fantastic women of that era. For the night of the Launch event, our aim was to take the nostalgia of the past and its unique visual references and bring it into the present time for a one-of-a-kind, inimitable evening, and also to project this vision for the future of Côte d’Ivoire .
